What It Does
Cerebrolysin is a standardized mixture of neuropeptide fragments that mimics the combined action of multiple neurotrophic factors โ BDNF, NGF, CNTF, and GDNF โ providing broad neuroprotective, neurogenic, and neurotrophic support. It is approved for stroke rehabilitation and dementia treatment in numerous countries. Active peptide fragments cross the blood-brain barrier and directly modulate neuronal survival, synaptic plasticity, and neurogenesis. The parent compound for the P21 neurogenic peptide fraction.
Mechanism of Action
- Multi-neurotrophic factor mimicry: Active peptide fractions (including P21) mimic BDNF, NGF, CNTF, and GDNF โ comprehensive neurotrophic support without requiring full-size protein administration
- BDNF and NGF upregulation: Promotes endogenous synthesis of both factors in hippocampus and cortex
- Neurogenesis: Stimulates hippocampal and cortical neural stem cell proliferation โ measurable increases in hippocampal volume
- Anti-excitotoxic protection: Reduces glutamate-mediated neuronal injury; stabilizes calcium homeostasis
- Anti-apoptotic signaling: Activates PI3K/Akt and MAPK/ERK survival pathways
- Synaptic plasticity: Enhances LTP (long-term potentiation) โ improved memory consolidation
- Amyloid and tau modulation: Reduces Aฮฒ aggregation and tau hyperphosphorylation in preclinical Alzheimer's models
